STOP DA VIOLENCE OCT '06 FEEDBACK [Download]
Stop DA Violence was organised by ‘TEEN SPIRIT’ (A youth group/young people aged 12 - 19) their objective was to communicate a message across to young people that they should ‘STOP and THINK’ as violence is not an answer.
The message was communicated, by spoken word, RAP, songs, Poems, Dance, Testimonies and a powerful Drama. A mother who had lost her son by an act of violence also spoke, moving the audience to tears at the reality of the trauma that families go through when a loved one is taken away so violently. The evening was also attended by Counsellor Stephen Timms, who made an encouraging comment in the Newham Recorder to ‘TEEN SPIRIT’.
Over 400 young people attended the event and the evening was a success. It was an evening that made an impact on all those who attended both young and old. As one of the youth mentors, I was moved by the maturity, creativity and determination of all the young people involved to make a difference in their society and amongst their peers. They faced all their challenges head on, and all pulled together to make it work. The evening was compeered by four young people who worked in teams of two engaging the audience, distributing free T shirts and Key rings and entertaining the crowd.
TEEN SPIRIT is now discussing the prospects of taking their message into schools by way of performances.
